Fri, 22 February 2008 Filmed 19 February 2008 Hammersmith Bridge is a suspension bridge which is more than 100 years old, spanning the River Thames linking Hammersmith to Barnes. The main structure is built of wrought iron and is 700ft long and 43ft wide. This episode takes you on a short journey from Hammersmith Bridge along the north shore of a bend in the River Thames, taking in boat communities, rowing teams, and life on the water. The bridge has had a dramatic life from buckling under the weight of heavy traffic to being subject to terrorist bombing. The fact that it survives and remains open today is testament to the love of the local community who have rallied to support it. The current suspension bridge was designed by noted civil engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette and rests on the same pier foundations constructed for an older bridge designed by Tierney Clark.
